Reentry in Context

Thu, Nov 14, 5:00 to 6:20pm, Nob Hill B - Lower B2 Level

Abstract

Community attributes play a significant role in the reentry process. Research indicates that beyond individual characteristics, community dynamics act as a central factor in reintegration success. While there is an established body of research related to the positive effects community level factors have on recidivism, continued inquiry into social ecology is needed, and especially among a new class of individuals who will be eligible for reentry through second look sentencing reforms. This paper considers perspectives of individuals who have been released from incarceration after resentencing about their experience of reentry related to community dynamics (e.g., size, location, economic factors, social problems). Findings detail the way community attributes impact reentry experiences and outcomes and identifies gaps in the community reentry process.
