An Effectiveness of the Integration of Robotics into Tactical Team Operation

Abstract

Due to the advancement of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, there are many potential advantages if law enforcement uses AI-powered robots in challenging and stressful environments. Robotic systems can provide ability to conduct reconnaissance and react to the crime scenes. Literature indicates that integration of robotics into tactical team operations help reducing the risk of injury or death in tactical situations. The purpose of this study is to empirically examine whether robots could be incorporated into a SWAT team as a member of the team and not just another piece of equipment. Additionally, this study evaluated if there was a preference for one ground robot to another. The findings of this study indicate that there was a strong preference for the more rugged, reliable, and faster robot, MooreBot. The authors discuss policy implication and/or future study.
