An Examination of Redemption Actions Through an Egalitarian Lens

Wed, Nov 13, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Sierra B - 5th Level

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between a person’s willingness to provide support to a reentering family member or friend (redemption actions) and the level of egalitarian values held by that person. What may lead a family member or friend to engage in redemption actions and what types of support (instrumental, interactional, or emotional) are they willing to offer? We hypothesized that those with stronger egalitarian values will be more willing to provide support to reentering family or friends. Data analyzed in this study comes from a 2023 YouGov public opinion survey (N ≈1,300) focused on criminal justice policies and people involved in the criminal justice system. Findings from a multivariate model examine the effect of egalitarianism on redemption actions. With this knowledge, we can further conceptualize who serves as supports in the communities formerly incarcerated people are returning to.
