In early 2020s, the Ad-hoc Committee on African American Disparity (ACAAD) of City of Greensboro sought to create a survey assessing the relationship between the police and the community. The committee aimed to understand misconceptions from both parties, both from the community about police functions, and from the police about community actions. The survey developments went through rigorous teamwork, with multiple sessions of focus group discussions with community leaders, government entities, and local law enforcement to understand the want and needs of various actors regarding this topic. The purpose of the survey was not to identify all the different conflicts and misconceptions, rather to begin a conversation between the two parties for further understanding and building community relationships. After close to two years of collaboration, the community survey was launched in Fall, 2023. This presentation will introduce the results from a final sample of 200 respondents. In addition, focus will be placed on the struggles and challenges during the construction and execution of survey of sensitive topics.
