Hotspot or Blindspot: Navigating the European Illegal Arms Market – A Case Study of Poland

Fri, Nov 15, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Pacific H - 4th Level

Abstract

Each year in the EU, approximately 600-700 homicides involve firearms, yet the illicit arms market in Europe has only recently garnered attention in criminological studies. Limited research has been conducted on the impact of illegal firearms trafficking on gun violence due to a lack of detailed data in many European countries. This type of crime is recognized as a key area for organized criminal activities. A study aimed to analyze changes in the supply of firearms and ammunition on Poland's illicit market, driven by factors like international influences, notably the Ukraine crisis since 2014. Poland's strategic location could affect public safety in Schengen Agreement states regarding organized crime, extremism, and terrorism. A comprehensive understanding of the illicit firearms market in Europe is essential for developing effective policy responses and enhancing cooperation among law enforcement agencies. The research serves as a foundation for further studies on the projected rise in weapon availability in the region. Funding for the research was provided by the National Science Centre (Poland) under the "PRELUDIUM-21" program (reg. no. 2022/45/N/HS5/04118).
