In recent years, beat policing has emerged as the dominant law enforcement philosophy in Bangladesh. The main objectives of the program include improving police services, reducing crime and disorder, identifying and solving community problems, and reducing citizens’ fear of crime. The aim of this study is two-fold: Firstly, to understand the residents’ involvement concerning the implementation of beat policing. Secondly, to identify the challenges to strengthening beat policing in Bangladesh. The study was conducted in 8 police beats under two police stations in Dhaka City. A mixed method comprising in-depth interviews and community surveys was used to collect the data. Data show that the vast majority of the respondents are not aware of the beat policing program in their neighborhoods. Hence, securing community participation in the program activities appeared to be a challenging task for the beat police officials. Interview data revealed that some officers are not adequately trained to conduct beat policing activities, in particular, problem-solving. The study concludes that the lack of resources, public involvement, and effective supervision and monitoring are the key impediments to strengthening beat policing in Dhaka City.
