The early debates about punishment at Rutgers were energetic, but about the wrong problem

Thu, Nov 14, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Foothill B - 2nd Level

Abstract

Founding faculty members Don Gottfredson, Andrew von Hirsch, and Richard F. Sparks were well known for their writing about punishment. The disagreements inherent in their work were a dominant feature of conversation in the School’s early days. Within a short time, however, developments in penology would overwhelm the penal system, making those debates “academic” in every sense of the word.
