Objective: In this study, we present the results from the planning phase conducted during the first year of a three-year grant funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance. The focus was to foster citizen participation and involvement in creating an action plan to address crime. The research team partnered with the Detroit Police Department, specifically targeting violent crime in Detroit’s Tenth Precinct. Data/ Methods: The research team analyzed historical crime data (2013-2023) and analyzed crime around vacant properties. The team conducted three impactful community engagement events and administered a comprehensive community-wide survey to elicit resident input to empower community members in identifying the root causes of crime within their community. Results: The outcome of these efforts guided the formulation of an action plan, with the community reaching a consensus on priorities and strategies, including identifying five crucial priority areas for neighborhood enhancement, improving community policing, increasing police presence, and implementing strategies to address blighted properties. Conclusions/ Implications: The presentation provides valuable insights into developing targeted policing strategies, addressing environmental design issues, and allocating resources effectively. It also offers an in-depth analysis of effective strategies to enhance citizen participation, aiming to mitigate violence and improve community quality of life.
