Scholars have argued that obtaining a college degree can combat the collateral consequences of a criminal record faced both by individuals with a record and their family members. Yet, we know little about the university pursuits of these two groups of justice-impacted individuals. In this presentation, I will discuss preliminary results from a qualitative study that investigates the learning experiences of justice-impacted undergraduate students attending a large U.S. university. The results will focus on challenges to pursuing higher education that are unique to these groups, as well as barriers and facilitators to educational success. It will conclude with recommendations for how to improve justice-impacted students' access to higher education and their completion of college degrees.
