Starting out with a project in Oakland as a Rutgers SCJ PhD student with David Weisburd and Ron Clarke, I became interested in the way police partnered with other city agencies to tackle crime-prone places (crack houses mainly) with drug problems. This was at the very early stages of synergies emerging between situational crime prevention and problem-oriented policing. These early experiences shaped my career. Moving back to Australia (Brisbane) in 2000, I continued my interest in partnership approaches to policing comparing and contrasting the varying impact of partnership approaches targeting people and places.
