Gun violence is the leading cause of death and disability among Black men ages 15-44 in Washington DC and nationally. This presentation will discuss the importance of place as a lens through which structural violence and its influences on community violence and trauma among young Black men in the nation’s capital can be documented and understood. Place-based research is a strong complement to community engaged research methods (CER). This presentation will also discuss how these rigorous methods in gun violence research can be used to evaluate and enhance the effectiveness of community violence interventions.
