Place-Based Problem Solving for Public Safety

Thu, Nov 14, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Foothill B - 2nd Level

Abstract

Decades of research confirm that crime and disorder highly cluster within a small number of micro places and that focusing resources in said places can significantly improve public safety. However, research is less conclusive on a number of important contextual factors, including the relative impact of different officer actions, the role of community perspectives, and the cost effectiveness of various strategies. The author will discuss his experience exploring such issues throughout his career, first as a Rutgers SCJ graduate student, then as a police crime analyst, and now as Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice.
