Building Context Specific Criminological Research and Theories

• In Event: Rutgers at 50: Advancing International Criminology

Abstract

The majority of criminological research and theories has originated from and has been based on studies in the Global North. There is a need to extend this knowledge base. The Rutgers School of Criminal Justice has been dedicated to supporting this effort across the globe. I discuss my research with incarcerated women in India and Sri Lanka, and how this work has been applied to the field. In addition, I present facilitators and challenges to building this work in South Asian settings.
