A Collaborative Campus Community Policing Model: A Case Study in Building Collective Efficacy

Wed, Nov 13, 5:00 to 6:20pm, Pacific A - 4th Level

Abstract

Community policing involves police establishing working partnerships through daily interactions with citizens to understand neighborhood problems and work in collaboration with the community to address neighborhood concerns. Modeled similarly to municipal police departments, campus police face several challenges in establishing collaborative partnerships, legitimacy, and building trust in a higher education environment. The purpose of this paper is to better understand whether and how students, faculty, staff members and campus police develop collective efficacy based on a campus police agency’s community policing model and how and if these shared beliefs influence their overall perceptions of campus safety.
