Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) has increasingly been incorporated into police organizational strategies in nuanced ways. This paper examines DEI from a historic lens as applied to police organizations. The paper advances the need for and importance of police organizations to have administrative policies and regulations in place that guide DEI over time. The general theme of this paper is that educational value and history in self-awareness relating to DEI should be imparted within police organizations. Consequently, police agencies may produce actionable results in how rank and file police personnel approach their thought processes of dealing with differences. The paper describes the process of how tolerance in the work environment is broken down into positives and negatives, to allow police personnel a chance to reflect on their desire to be service providers. Police policy to fundamental practice implications are identified and discussed.
