Evaluating Violence Programming in Prison: Comparing Cognitive-Behavioral and Psycho-Educational Approaches

Fri, Nov 15, 12:30 to 1:50pm, Juniper - B2 Level

Abstract

The consequences of violence carry significant weight, posing a threat to safety both in the community and institutions. Consequently, providing violence-reducing treatment is a high priority in prison settings. In this study, we assess the outcomes of two prison-based programs implemented in a Midwestern state. The first program utilizes a cognitive-behavioral curriculum to promote development. The second is a cognitive-behavioral educational course that exposes participants to pro-social coping mechanisms and redirection strategies to manage emotions and behavior. We examine how these programs affect institutional misconduct, risk/need scores, and community recidivism. We conclude with policy implications and recommendations for improving violence-reduction programming within correctional facilities.
