The aging prison population, which typically consists of people aged 55 and older, has grown significantly in recent decades—from 3 percent in 1993 to 22 percent in 2020 (Carson, 2021). This growth presents custodial and reentry challenges for correctional administrators and older incarcerated people. This presentation explores the policy and practice issues central to elder reentry including the institutional and community corrections implications of a growing elder population, the custodial needs and reentry challenges of elder incarcerated people, the landscape of elder reentry interventions, and implications for policy, practice, and research.
