Many schools in Ontario Canada rely on ‘just say no’ abstinence-based approaches (e.g., DARE, VIP) that have not been effective in reducing youth substance use. Through consultation with the local health department, two school boards, high school students (focus groups), the authors of this paper have created an online biopsychosocial harm reduction resource for high school students that will fulfill governmental mandates and provide youth with knowledge to make informed choices about substance use after learning about the benefits and harms. To evaluate the effectiveness of this online resource, high school students facing suspension due to substance-related infractions will be given the opportunity to complete this online program. Students, aged 14-18 in six high schools across two local school boards (one Catholic and one public) will complete a pre and post-test that evaluates their substance use knowledge before and after taking part in the program. This paper provides an overview of research findings from the pilot phase of the study (to be collected in May and June of 2024).
