Limited research has explored the influence of legal representation type on defendants' sentencing outcomes. This study utilizes administrative data from Kansas to investigate how the type of defense counsel—appointed or retained—affects sentencing departures for plea-bargained felonies. Additionally, it analyzes whether the impact of legal representation type differs across court jurisdictions. Implications for research and due process are discussed.
