Law enforcement has faced calls to reform their operations for decades, often with a focus on becoming more community-oriented. This philosophy of Community Policing has informed much of the training and discussion of law enforcement since the 1990s. However, advocates and policy makers have increasingly called for officers to receive de-escalation training, in addition to other training. Rather than discard the community policing philosophy and its associated strategies, de-escalation can be easily incorporated into existing trainings and policies. Using NDTC’s De-escalation: Principles & Practice training as a template, this presentation will demonstrate how to achieve agency and line officer support for the training and build a foundation for the training’s use.
