Beyond the Margins: A Meta-Analysis of Missing LGBTQ+ Youth: Causes, Protective Factors, Experiences, and Support Needs

Fri, Nov 15, 12:30 to 1:50pm, Nob Hill B - Lower B2 Level

Abstract

This paper synthesizes research on LGBTQ+ young people who go "missing," encompassing those who are homeless, runaways or "throwaways," trafficked, unaccompanied asylum seekers, and others. First, the varied reasons behind the disappearance of LGBTQ+ youth are explored, ranging from familial rejection to systemic failures in providing adequate support and protection. The paper also explores protective factors that could potentially prevent LGBTQ+ youths from going missing, such as the availability of supportive social networks, access to LGBTQ+-affirming services, and inclusive policy frameworks. The experiences of LGBTQ+ young people while missing are also examined, highlighting their vulnerability to exploitation, mental health struggles, and their resilience in the face of adversity. Finally, the paper scrutinizes the support needs of LGBTQ+ youth at missing and beyond, emphasizing the importance of tailored, culturally competent, and trauma-informed care. The paper aims to shed light on the gaps in current research and practice, advocating for a holistic approach to support and protection.
