Law enforcement use of force is a growing public concern, but relatively little research has been done investigating the format and fidelity of individual agency tracking of the issue. This study examines the Use of Force data collection formats for a sample of law enforcement agencies across the United States, particularly focusing on reporting thresholds, variable definitions, response fidelity, and data structures. We compare these formats with the FBI Use of Force Data Collection program and close with a discussion of our findings and the policy implications.
