Not So Minor: An Analysis of Females Who Sexually Offend Against Underaged Persons

Fri, Nov 15, 8:00 to 9:20am, Sierra H - 5th Level

Abstract

In the present study, we conducted face-to-face interviews with females on the sex offender registry in Southeast Texas to explore patterns in female sexual offending against underaged persons. Our ongoing research leads us to the conclusion that it is imperative to examine both the situational forces as well as the individual characteristics that compel females to offend against minors. Given the relational and contextual nature of female sexual offending, as well as the political, social, historical, biological, and economic realities which invariably shape women’s lives, there is a need for a gender-specific approach toward female sexual offending. More research is needed to explore the nuances of female sexual offending. Specifically, factors, such as, prior victimization experiences, substance abuse history, trauma, and social norms which dictate behavior for both genders should be considered when differentiating between women’s and men’s experiences with sexual offending.
