The Efficacy of Body-worn Cameras: An Examination of Existing Technologies

Thu, Nov 14, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Sierra H - 5th Level

Abstract

As body worn cameras (BWCs) become more common, concerns about their efficacy persist. Stakeholder concerns include distortion at the time of recording as well as the security of evidence during the course of law enforcement processing and subsequent legal proceedings. A market analysis conducted by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) in 2018 focused on available products without commentary about functionality, limitations, or productive improvements of the technology. The purpose of this study is to examine and assess existing technology utilized by various law enforcement agencies including BWC models in current use, their respective data storage infrastructure, and cyber physical system solutions as they relate to evidence gathering and interoperability. This review would identify BWC technology schemes' relative strengths and weaknesses.
