Before the Build and Broaden Team, there was the Police and Community Engagement Model (PACE) and before PACE there was the Black lens. In this paper the original PACE model collaborators and the editor and contributors for the Why the Police Should be Trained by Black People book describe how their lenses are catalysts for stronger and safer neighborhoods. Their perspectives are measurable components for 1. a community safety mandate and 2. lessening the deleterious impact of the original law enforcement and crime control mandate in anomic neighborhoods. The realities of white supremacy/ colonialism are discussed as it relates to the historical characterizations of policing in predominantly Black communities.
