Status or Freedom

Abstract

The connection between prisoner re-entry and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, has been utilized to exam the challenges releasing individuals may face (MERCI, 2002). Maslow’s hierarchy of needs has five levels with the first two levels focusing on the basic physiological (food, shelter, etc.) and safety (Health, employment, etc.) (Maslow, 1943). This presentation will expose a gap in the literature that focuses on the fourth level of Maslow’s hierarchy, esteem, status, strength, freedom, etc. This research hypothesizes that when an individual gains a level of status while incarcerated if this status does not transfer with them upon their release, the loss of this status could play a significant role in the likelihood of the individual recidivating. This research is important to develop an understanding of the many challenges and individual faces upon release. This research could also assist in the development of programming that works to replace the loss of status that is gained while incarcerated. This hypothesis will be examined through qualitative interviews with formerly incarcerated individuals. These interviews will focus on the challenges facing an individual who loses status upon release from prison and if and how status was regained after release from prison.
