Evidence from fear of crime studies that used the disorder model suggests a direct relationship between incivilities and fear of crime. Studies that used adolescent samples found a positive relationship between school and neighborhood incivilities and fear of crime. However, there is still a lack of studies explaining adolescent fear of crime. For example, studies that integrated the disorder model and Ferraro’s risk assessment framework to explain youth fear of crime are lacking. Secondly, studies rarely attempt to understand how the interaction between perceptions of neighborhood and school problems affects youth’s perceived risk and fear of crime in neighborhood settings. Therefore, using secondary data, this study examines the underlying mediating role of the perceived risk of victimization and the moderating role of perceptions of school problems between perceptions of neighborhood problems and fear of crime.
