While many police departments in Oklahoma have adopted the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) model for handling people with mental illness, to date, no study has been conducted on chiefs’ perceptions of this model. To address this gap in the literature, the current study collected state-wide survey data from police chiefs working in Oklahoma regarding their favorability toward the CIT model and the factors influencing their views. The findings revealed that certain factors were related to chiefs’ perceptions toward the CIT model. Suggestions for future research and potential policy implications are discussed.
