International Criminality and Complicity of World Powers

Fri, Nov 15, 12:30 to 1:50pm, Foothill G2 - 2nd Level

Abstract

Cases have recently been brought before the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court alleging that Germany and Australia, respectively, are complicit in genocide perpetrated by Israel in the Gaza Strip. Germany is the second largest provider of arms to Israel, and a joint US-Australian military base in Australia furnishes Israel with intelligence used in its military operations. This talk discusses the question of whether, in the event that an atrocity crime is found to have been committed by a state, world powers should be held jointly accountable where they play a role in supporting the military operations of such state, and, if so, what the parameters and consequences should be for any shared responsibility.
