A Rapist typology of Japanese ex-prisoners

Thu, Nov 14, 6:15 to 7:15pm, Golden Gate A+B - B2 Level

Abstract

This study aims to find if the Japanese sex offender's rehabilitative treatment program is effective for what type of rapists based on their 3-year follow-up data from the day of their release to December 2017. Based on the knowledge acquired throughout the previous studies, we separated the 534 subjects into two types: Type A (104) knew or at least acquainted with the victim before committing rape, and Type B (430) did not. During the follow-up period, we found that the Type A subjects committed sexual offense(s) again at the rate of 0.00, while their recidivism rate for other offenses was 0.09. Within the Type A subjects, we did not observe a significant preventive effect of the treatment programs. The corresponding rates for Type B subjects were 0.12 and 0.13. We observe significant preventive effects only for Type B subjects with no previous sex offense history. We discuss the practicality of separating these rapists into these two groups in terms of treatment effectiveness. We then discuss how to employ the treatment programs within this group of rapists.
