Comparing the Social Media Values of Criminal Justice and Non-Criminal Justice Majors

Thu, Nov 14, 6:15 to 7:15pm, Golden Gate A+B - B2 Level

Abstract

Many university-level criminal justice courses focus on teaching students how to make good moral and ethical decisions. Non-criminal justice courses do not always teach students these values. The rise of social media has caused many people to spread harmful content online. The goal of this project is to see if there is a connection between studying criminal justice and being conscious of what is inappropriate to post on social media. Investigating how students majoring in criminal justice perceive negative social media content in comparison to students of other majors can give researchers a better understanding of how studying criminal justice influences one’s digital footprint. This project will survey university students on their values surrounding what they post and engage with on social media. This data will be analyzed to determine if there is a relationship between one’s major and perception of what not to post on social media.
