Exploring Online Violence Prevention: A Scoping Review Approach

Thu, Nov 14, 6:15 to 7:15pm, Golden Gate A+B - B2 Level

Abstract

The rise of digital communication platforms has not only intensified concerns surrounding online violence but has also facilitated the emergence of new forms of violence. However, the absence of consensus on defining and addressing these issues remains challenging. This scoping review aims to map existing literature on online violence prevention measures, recognizing its diverse manifestations and disproportionate impact on various demographic groups. Following PRISMA guidelines, the article describes a rigorous search and selection process using Covidence software. The review includes studies evaluating initiatives aimed at preventing online violence among individuals aged 12 to 29 years, with emphasis placed on studies assessing the effectiveness of online violence prevention interventions through behavioral changes, as well as perceptions of these intervention programs. The study addresses the following key components: (1) contextualizing online violence and understanding the complexities in identifying and categorizing online violent behaviors, (2) mapping prevention practices across various contexts, including educational programs, policy interventions, and technological solutions, (3) discussing the implications of the findings for future research endeavors and informing evidence-based practices. This scoping review serves as a robust foundation for future research in the field, providing valuable insights into effective prevention strategies and areas warranting further investigation.
