Conversations of the business of punishment fall along many axis, however, the financial toll that incarceration takes on individuals incarcerated is quite substantial. In addition to costs associated with the criminal conviction, individuals living in penal institutions are required to pay for the few liberties that they retain: including phones or tablets and medical care in some states (Sawyer, 2017 ), and food (cite). This paper will focus on the money incarcerated persons spend on food to illustrate how capitalistic goals have fused with penal goals such that we require citizens to pay for a basic necessity.
