San Diego has faced a rise in violent crime at bus stops and on public transit. Despite efforts by the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) to increase security staffing, high-profile incidents involving assaults, shootings, and homicides have led to safety concerns among riders and transit employees. This project will examine the spatial patterns and contributing factors to transit-related crimes throughout San Diego. Utilizing crime data from the San Diego Police Department and the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS), the study will analyze crime rates along different bus routes and at varying bus stops. The goal is to characterize and investigate environmental factors associated with the clustering of criminal activity in specific locations.
