The substantial mental and physical health problems of the incarcerated population have been heavily documented. A recent study found that multimorbidity, defined as the co-occurrence of multiple physical and mental health conditions and disabilities, was particularly prevalent among the jail population – citing that the prevalence of two or more co-occurring conditions was 76.9%. Research on the prevalence of multimorbidity among prison inmates is comparatively scarce to that of jails. Using the Bureau of Justice Statistics' National Inmate Survey, 2011-2012, the current study builds on existing work by expanding the analysis of jail multimorbidity by using a larger sample than previous work for a more precise estimate, conducting analyses of multimorbidity among prison inmates, and comparing the prevalence of multimorbidity between jails and prisons.
