Understanding Social Media Use by Montreal Street Gangs

Thu, Nov 14, 7:30 to 8:30pm, Golden Gate A+B - B2 Level

Abstract

Research on social media use by gangs is evolving, with Quebec's firearm issues highlighting the need for intelligence-led policing and social media surveillance (Mateescu et al., 2015).

This research investigates the use of social media by street gangs in Montreal. Analyzing 45 gang profiles on Instagram and 40 videos on YouTube, the study aims to elucidate the identity and activities of these groups.

The first segment examines the demographic composition, historical background, and territorial influence of these gangs. The subsequent analysis focuses on their three thematic content areas. The primary theme discusses the presence of firearms on social media, examining how guns are portrayed, shared, and discussed on various platforms. The second theme addresses group identification, looking at how individuals align with certain groups and the dynamics of belonging. The third theme considers the role of ornaments, exploring the significance and function of decorative items in various cultures and settings, and how they contribute to cultural expression and personal identity.

By offering insights into the strategies and societal impacts of street gangs' online presence, this research is crucial for law enforcement agencies, policymakers, and community organizations. It aims to develop targeted interventions to address gang-related issues and enhance public safety.
