Academia can be difficult to navigate, and even more so when coupled with the fact that many of us are dealing with and processing (sometimes multiple) incidents of trauma that occur in our lives. In addition to the academy itself being a source of trauma for many scholars, participating in academia can exacerbate PTSD and other issues that trauma survivors often encounter. Many academics, particularly junior faculty, live in fear of discussing their trauma as they do not want it used negatively against them. As someone who has experienced adversity in academia because of being open about my past traumas, I want to share my experiences with new and up and coming faculty. There are practical lessons that can be learned from my experiences, and I want to share that with all faculty but especially those rising through the ranks. This talk will center on the emerging field of study called Survivor Criminology.
