Credible Messengers Practice-Led Account of Why “Lived Experience” Makes a Difference to Prisoners’ Lives

Fri, Nov 15, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Sierra G - 5th Level

Abstract

This paper will attempt to understand the role of “credible messengers”, those who are motivated to use previous experiences, in this case of criminal justice, to teach creative education and design thinking in prison and ultimately to inspire some transformation of the criminal justice system (CJS). By discussing case studies linked to co-creation and co-production and how some learning could be transferable to prison practice and policy, an idea is presented that the people who should be ‘doing the work’ are people using lived experience positively. Through the discussion of two creative case studies (Stretch and Makeright), across 7 sections, we will offer a short review of the contribution of life stories and lived experience to the world of prison and research to better raise and contextualise some issues that hold back the emergence or credible messages as “experts of experience” (CJS).
