Perceptions of Safety: Post Mass Shooting at University Level

Thu, Nov 14, 7:30 to 8:30pm, Golden Gate A+B - B2 Level

Abstract

The purpose of this study will investigate the perceptions of campus safety within university settings, specifically, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, following the December 6th mass shooting. With a specific focus on the impact of active shooter concerns. Through a survey, sent out on UNLV campus, we will explore the various stakeholders (students, faculty, staff, and administrators) on how they perceive safety on campus in light of ramifications of the past events. The significance of this research is to examine the campus safety perceptions with the increase in violence in educational spaces. This research will help to inform future university policies regarding how to handle major violence on campuses. But also giving recognition to the understudied population of university stakeholders, but also the unique aspect of Las Vegas, and its recent history with mass shootings. Results will be available and discussed at the conference.
