Gangs in the Eastern and Southern Caribbean

Wed, Nov 13, 5:00 to 6:20pm, Salon 7 - Lower B2 Level - Area 6

Abstract

The presentation derives from a year of research on gangs which concluded in 2023. The focus was on criminal gangs in 11 Eastern and Southern Caribbean countries. The research attempted to find out about the nature and extent of criminal gangs in each of the target countries, their involvement in crime, risk factors for gang membership, the prevalence of gang membership among school-aged youth, and youth in detention facilities, and other areas. Primary data were collected for three countries from school youth, youths in detention facilities, and from police gang experts. Secondary data from the police, intelligence agencies, and other sources were used in all countries. The intended presentation offers insight into some of the key findings.
