Public Views of the Police during the Pandemic in South Korea

Thu, Nov 14, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Salon 7 - Lower B2 Level - Area 6

Abstract

How the public views police plays a critical role in building a healthy partnership between citizens and police. During the COVID-19 pandemic, police were required to provide more services than ever before by taking measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus. By doing so, police may build an image that they are playing the role of a public servant who is available, helpful, just, and trustful which may contribute to the increase in police legitimacy among the public. However, the traumatic experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic raise questions about police activities and changes in our perception of police during the pandemic. In this regard, this study aims to understand levels of perceived police legitimacy during the pandemic period. The results of analysis using data from South Korea indicate that individuals tend to hold higher levels of legitimacy after the COVID-19 pandemic.
