The Value of Fostering Intrinsic Motivation in Undergraduate Learning

Wed, Nov 13, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Sierra H - 5th Level

Abstract

Studies show support for incorporating Self-Determination Theory principles into the learning environment in a variety of different disciplines and at various age groups. Competence, autonomy, and relatedness built into the education process energizes intrinsic motivation, and intrinsically motivated students perform better and are psychologically healthier. However, there is no research in the field of criminal justice education that explores whether fostering intrinsic motivation with criminal justice students results in the same benefits. This survey research aimed to address that gap by assessing intrinsic motivation, stress, and cell-phone addiction amongst undergraduate versus graduate criminal justice students at a mid-size university in the northeastern part of the United States. The survey results highlight how intrinsic motivation among students is related to academic performance and other important factors.
