Many studies have examined the connection between college students’ use of smartphones in classrooms and their academic performance. Findings from these studies have yielded mixed results. The current study seeks to explore the impacts of smartphone usage in classrooms on learning and academic achievements of college students. Employing a mixed-methods approach, a survey was sent to students at a mid-size university in the Northeast. With over 1,000 responses, the survey gathers both quantitative and qualitative data on students’ smartphone use during class, their overall learning experience, and their academic performance. Findings suggest that smartphone usage patterns are connected to students’ academic success and other aspects of their educational experiences. Recommendations for potential educational policies and strategies including integration of smartphones into learning activities are further discussed.
