In this presentation we discuss the introduction of a 1-unit course for Criminology and Justice Studies majors developed in response to a university initiative to increase classroom equity and student retention and decrease DFW rates. Through the development of a critical justice project focused on praxis, students work to address inequities at the heart of our medical and healthcare systems that may lead to involvement in the civil and criminal legal systems. We discuss successes and challenges of the first iteration of this course as well as those in the second stage of course development, which involves collaboration of students in the course with upper-division students acting as mentors and guides.
