Individuals impacted by the criminal legal system are disproportionately excluded from education and workforce opportunities and the inequities have been particularly stigmatizing and constrained for individuals from marginalized racial and gender identities. In this way, criminal legal system contact exacerbates long-standing social and economic inequities and reinforces disparities by race and place. The American Institutes for Research's Justice Equity Fellowship program aims to address systemic inequities and creates opportunities to advance employment opportunities and inclusion of individuals with lived experiences with the criminal legal system. The Fellowship program also includes a fellow-led participatory action research project resulting in recommendations for enhancing organizational capacity and fostering an inclusive workforce.
