Thu, Nov 14, 7:30 to 8:30pm, Golden Gate A+B - B2 Level

Abstract

This research paper delves into the transformative potential of positive programs, with a specific focus on the utilization of Dog-Training initiatives within Correctional Facilities. The study investigates the profound impact of these programs on prisoner rehabilitation and their ability to enhance the overall mood. Aiming to understand the underlying mechanisms through which these programs influence incarcerated individuals. The research employs a comprehensive mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys to gather data from the program participants. The qualitative analysis offers an in-depth exploration of prisoners’ lived experiences and perspectives, shedding light on the transformative effects of dog-training programs on their self-concept, emotional regulation, and interpersonal skills. The quantitative component consisted of pre- and post-program assessment of prisoners’ mood and overall well-being. The findings of the study indicate that dog-training programs provide a unique avenue for prisoners seeking rehabilitation by fostering a sense of purpose, responsibility, and empathy. Participants consistently reported increased self-esteem, improved emotional regulation, and a heightened sense of personal agency. Furthermore, the positive nature of these programs attracts individuals who are already dedicated to their personal growth, offering them an opportunity to further their rehabilitation by contributing to society through their interactions with the dogs.
