The purpose of this research is to examine whether racial (i.e., Black) and ethnic (i.e., Latino) population threat impact sentencing in the state of Maryland. Using data from 2018-2021 of over 50,000 sentenced defendents, this research uses multilevel modeling to test whether Blalock's Racial Threat Theory is supported. The results suggest mixed support for the theory. Implications from these results and direction for subsequent research will be discussed.
