This paper will focus on how different rehabilitation programs impact recidivism rates. Rehabilitation is one of the goals associated with incarceration. This is important when considering the criminal justice system as the system was built to provide those who enter the system with retribution, rehabilitation, deterrence, and incapacitation (Mackenzie, 2001). Rehabilitation in the field of criminal justice seeks to help the offenders understand their wrongdoings, prepare them for re-entering into society, and prevent re-offending. Recidivism, on the other hand, is the likelihood of an offender re-offending. Where a lack of knowledge and access to rehabilitation programs exist, recidivism rate should rise. This research seeks to conduct a literature review on the different programs offered within prisons in North Carolina, and how the rehabilitation programs impacted recidivism rates.
