College Students’ Perspective on Safety Regarding Campus Shootings

Thu, Nov 14, 6:15 to 7:15pm, Golden Gate A+B - B2 Level

Abstract

The purpose of my study is to explore how widely publicized shootings on college campuses affect Wayne State University (WSU) students' perceptions of safety on campus. To conduct this exploratory study, I will invite WSU students to participate in an online survey on perceptions of safety on campus. The survey will further investigate the role of the WSU Police Department in influencing students’ perceptions of safety and what can be done by WSU to improve campus safety. Research on this topic is severely limited and focuses predominantly on colleges located in more affluent cities with lower levels of gun violence in comparison to Detroit. Due to this gap in research, I am optimistic that WSU and other colleges can use the information gathered from my study to implement measures to increase students' perceptions of safety on campus.
