The increasing popularity of true crime media has captured the attention of viewers worldwide and can be seen in a wide range of formats, including podcasts, movies, and documentaries. Previous research has linked the consumption of true crime information to an increased fear of crime, especially for female consumers. Women are not only more fearful of crimes, but they also make up the majority of true crime media consumers, especially when it comes to podcasts. According to research, people consume true crime stories to prepare themselves for situations in which they could become victims. On the other hand, this exposure may counterintuitively increase anxiety and decrease perceived readiness to prevent victimization. In order to further explain the nuances of how these narratives are consumed and analyzed, this research aims to analyze the complexity of true crime media consumption.
